Admission qualification

The eligibility to seek admission in Bachelor of Sowa-Rigpa education is as under:-

  • 12th Standard with science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) or any other equivalent examination recognised by concerned State Government, education boards.
  • 12th Standard with Bhoti language, Buddhist philosophy and logic.
  • For foreign students, any other equivalent qualification to be approved by the University concerned may be allowed.
Duration of course:

The duration of the MenpaKachupa (Bachelor of Sowa-Rigpa Medicine and Surgery-BSRMS) degree course shall be five years and six months comprising:-

  • First professional - Twelve months
  • Second professional - Twelve months
  • Third professional - Twelve months
  • Final professional - Eighteen months
  • Compulsory Rotatory Internship - Twelve months.
Degree to be awarded:/Medium of instruction
  • To produce undergraduates, post graduates and Ph.D students in Sowa-Rigpa.
  • To be developed as Centre of Excellence,focused on fundamental Research,Drug Safety evaluation,standardization,quality control and scientific validation of Sowa-Rigpa.
  • To impart reorientation training and continuing medical education to Sowa-Rigpa Physicians and Teachers.
  • To generate awareness about the potential and strength of Sowa-Rigpa and to promote growth and development of Sowa-Rigpa.
  • To provide quality Sowa-Rigpa health care to public.
  • To pursue such other activities and programmes as necessary to promote Sowa-Rigpa.
Degree to be awarded:/Medium of instruction

The candidate shall be awarded MenpaKachupa (Bachelor of Sowa-Rigpa Medicine and Surgery – B.S.R.M.S.) degree after passing all the examinations and completion of the prescribed course of study extending over the prescribed period and the compulsory rotatory internship extending over twelve months. Medium of instruction:- The medium of instruction for the course shall be Bhoti language.

Scheme of examination

(1) The first professional session shall ordinarily start in March and the first professional examination shall be at the end of one academic year of first professional session.

(a) The first professional examination shall be held in the following subjects,namely:-

  • rTsarGyud- I (History of Sowa Rigpa)
  • rTsarGyud- II (Fundamentals of Sowa-Rigpa)
  • Luskyignas lugs (Anatomy)
  • Luskyimtshannyid (Physiology)
  • nPhidripgNat(Characteristic of disorders)and
  • Bhoti Language paper.

A student failed in not more than two subjects shall be held eligible to keep the terms for the second professional course, and shall not be allowed to appear for second professional examination unless the student passes in all the subjects of the first professional.

(2) The second professional session shall start every year in the month of March after completion of first professional examination and the second professional examination shall be ordinarily held and completed by the end of month of December or January every year after completion of one year of second professional session.

(a) The second professional examination shall be held in the following subjects, namely:-

  • Zas tang- schodlam (Dietetics & Community Medicine)
  • sByorwasman- I (Materia Medica – Plant Kingdom)
  • sByorwasman- II (Materia Medica – Metal, Mineral, and Animal Kingdom)
  • gsotshulbshad pa (Therapeutic Principle)
  • Phyima’irGyud- ZiChedSmanGimDo (Pharmacy)

A student failed in not more than two subjects shall be held eligible to keep the terms for the third professional course, and shall not be allowed to appear for third professional examination unless the student passes in all the subjects of the second professional.

(3)The third professional session shall start every year in the month of March after completion of second professional examination and the third professional examination shall be ordinarily held and completed by the end of the month of December or January every year after completion of one year of third professional session.

(a) The third professional examination shall be held in the following subjects, namely:-

  • gNatrtaksthaps (General Pathology)
  • Man ngagrgyud- LusStodSowa (Head and Neck disorders)
  • Man ngagrgyud- Ton sNod Sowa and Sang gNas (Disorders of Thorax, Abdomen, and Genital Organs)
  • Manngagrgyud- LhanskesrMa (Malignant Tumor, Disorders of Blood and Blood Vessels)

A student failed in not more than two subjects shall be held eligible to keep the terms for the final professional course, and shall not be allowed to appear for final professional examination unless the student passes in all the subjects of the Third professional examination.

(4) The final professional session shall be of one year and six months duration and shall start every year in the month of March following completion of third professional examination and the final professional examination shall be ordinarily held and completed by the end of month of June or July every year after completion of one year and six months of final professional session.

(a) The final professional examination shall be held in the following subjects, namely:-

  • Lus-NadSowaySman (General Medicine)
  • Man ngagrGyud- byis pa gsoba (Neonatal care and pediatric disorders)
  • Man ngagrGyud-Monad Sowa (Gynecological and obstetrics disorders)
  • rTsubrChad and rMa Sowa (Wounds and Surgical therapy)
  • Phyima’IrGyud- Las Nga Tang, Jam, Chad (External and Rejuvenation Therapy)

A student who passed all the subjects of final year examination shall be eligible for joining the compulsory one year internship.

Examination
  • 1. The minimum marks required for passing the examination shall be fifty per cent in theory and fifty per cent in practical or clinical or viva-voce, wherever applicable separately in each subject.
  • 2. A candidate obtaining seventy-five per cent marks in the subject shall be awarded distinction in the subject as per the institute rule.
  • 3. The supplementary examination shall be held within six months of regular examination and failed students shall be eligible to appear in its supplementary examination, as the case may be.
  • 4. Each student shall be required to maintain seventy-five per cent attendance in each subject (in theory and practical) for appearing in the examination and in this regard a class attendance card shall be maintained for each student for the different subjects and the Principal shall arrange to obtain the signature of the students, teachers at the end of each course of lectures and practical instructions and send the cards to each Head of the Department for final completion before the commencement of each examination.
